We knew DeskPlus was popular, but the appeal of location variety is near-universal among millennial managers, as Akumina found in its 2019 Millennial Manager Survey.

Understanding that millennials will comprise 75 percent of the U.S. workforce by 2030—and that millennial employee turnover is costing the U.S. economy $30.5 billion each year—Akumina surveyed more than 1,000 mid- to executive-level managers between the ages of 18 and 36 in an effort "to better understand millennials' direct impact on business today."

And the demand for the type of workplace flexibility we call DeskPlus, the ability to work away from the office for a portion of the workweek, was overwhelming. 89 percent of respondents said they would prefer to work from home at least one day per week, with 36 percent wanting three or more work-from-home days.

Perhaps these millennial managers need more time for heads-down work without the distractions of a shared workplace and without the constraints of a workday schedule filled with meetings. Perhaps they need more time to be "makers" instead of just managers. Perhaps they have caregiving responsibilities that require them to hew closer to home during weekdays. Or perhaps they’ve found that spending fewer hours of their life stuck in rush hour traffic makes them more productive.

No matter the reason, DeskPlus is the most in-demand type of flexibility for all workers, according to our research, with 84 percent of white-collar employees in the U.S. expressing a need for it but 21 percent actually having access to it.

Employers have everything to gain by incorporating DeskPlus should their employees need it. For one, DeskPlus and Remote allow companies to reduce real estate costs: When workers work remotely for all or part of the workweek, fewer workers need permanent desks. Additionally, DeskPlus is an effective method for upping employee engagement: A 2017 Gallup report showed that workers "spend 60% to less than 80% of their workweek—or three to four days—working off-site" experience the "optimal engagement boost."
