Welcome to our Company Partner Spotlight series! At Werk, we believe it’s important to highlight companies that are taking the initiative to understand and implement flexibility within their organizations. Today’s spotlight is on Custora, an early adopter of FlexCert™.

Company: Custora
Headquarters: Flatiron, New York City
CEO/Co-Founder: Corey Pierson

What they do:

Custora is an advanced segmentation platform designed to help online retailers better understand and market to their customers.

The team:

Custora is proud of its 50/50, men-to-women ratio across the company (currently 23 women and 22 men)—especially as a growing technology firm. Of their 13 Director or Lead positions, 6 are held by women.

Why flexibility matters:

“At a growing startup, it can be hard to find that elusive ‘work-life balance.’ The great thing about Custora is that we recognize neither work nor life fits into a tidy box. At Custora, we pride ourselves on having a diverse employee base and with that we recognize that individuals might have different needs. Flexibility can manifest itself in multiple ways and our company: flexible work hours (TimeShift™), work from home as needed (DeskPlus™), micro-flexibility as needed (MicroAgility™), and unlimited vacation.”

The value of FlexCert™:

“FlexCert™ is a way for us to learn and implement new ways to offer flexibility—how do we strike the right balance for each Custorian and the company’s needs? Surely there’s more we can do to help folks be their best self, personally and professionally. Additionally, it can help us structure the dialogue around flexibility both internally and externally, especially as we grow our team.”

The value of diversity:

“Diversity is a critical component of our organization. In fact, it permeates everything we do from internal communications to our hiring and orientation practices.

During each person’s Custorientation, we educate folks on the various biases that can naturally occur during an interview and discuss ways to overcome them. We also use a scorecarding process post-interview that allows Custorians to provide input without discussing their views with the next interview group. This helps us avoid confirmation bias.

We strongly believe that diversity allows our organization to achieve greater results, attain better thought leadership and drive innovation.

We embrace and encourage our employees’ differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our employees unique."

Diversity initiatives at Custora:

“Diversity initiatives are applicable—but not limited—to our practices and policies on recruitment and selection; compensation and benefits; professional development and training; promotions; transfers; social and recreational programs; layoffs; terminations; and the ongoing development of a work environment built on the premise of gender and diversity equity that encourages and enforces:

  • Respectful communication and cooperation between all employees
  • Teamwork and employee participation, permitting the representation of all groups and employee perspectives
  • Work/life balance through flexible work schedules to accommodate employees’ varying needs
  • Employer and employee contributions to the communities we serve to promote a greater understanding and respect for the diversity

Custora is committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity and inclusion.”
